CINCINNATI (WKRC) – It’s a major shake-up for the Xavier men’s basketball team.
Head coach Sean Miller is reportedly leaving Xavier for the head coaching job at the University of Texas.
This comes just days after the Musketeers beat the Longhorns in a First Four NCAA Tournament game.
The news came as a bit of a shock to students on Xavier’s campus.
“Really surprised, especially Texas, I mean, of any team that’s crazy, we just beat them in the tournament,” said Ryan Chastonay, a Xavier University freshman.
A sentiment echoed by freshman George Henzel.
“Especially after the win, I mean, why switch,” said Henzel.
With shock comes some frustration for students, like Londynn Bodie, a junior at Xavier.
“You lost on Friday and 48 hours later, we lose our coach, it’s not really the best feeling,” said Bodie. “I think everyone’s frustrated, I think everyone’s upset, I mean, like it was a stab in the back.”
Miller served as the Musketeer’s head coach from 2004 through 2009. He returned in 2022, leading Xavier to two appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
“It stings, I mean, now he’s left twice, it hurts,” said Chastonay.
With the NCAA Transfer Portal set to open on Monday, students also worry that Miller could take some current players with him.
I just pray that we don’t lose Dailyn and Conwell in the process,” said Bodie. “I fear that Dailyn is going to leave but whatever is meant to be, will be and I just hope that we are able to produce as well going forward.”
While there are some hard feelings with Miller’s departure, some students are optimistic the program’s winning way will continue.
“I think Xavier basketball will be fine, you know, we have a pretty strong, we do a pretty good job here of winning games,” said Chastonay.
While the Musketeers search for Miller’s replacement, students, like Bodie said they wouldn’t mind seeing Luke Murray as the next head coach. Murray is currently an assistant coach at UConn.
Murray was an assistant at Xavier from 2015 through 2018.
