WATCH: Stefanik does not answer whether Palestinian people have the right to self-determination

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said on Tuesday in her confirmation hearing for ambassador to the U.N. that while Palestinian people deserve human rights, Israel has a biblical right to the West Bank.

She was responding to questions by Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who pressed her on her larger views of human rights and self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians, including whether Palestinians have the right to self-determination.

“I think it’s a disgrace that Hamas and Hezbollah have stripped human rights of the Palestinian people and we need to ensure that we are standing up for human rights and that Israel is standing up for human rights,” Stefanik said.

Stefanik said she believed that Israel “is a beacon of human rights in the region,” but she did not answer whether the Palestinian people have the right to self-determination.

Van Hollen then asked if she shared the view that “Israel has a biblical right to the entire West Bank,” and Stefanik said yes.

Stefanik, a loyal ally to Trump, is chair of the House Republican Conference, and was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress when she won her seat in 2014. While she has little foreign policy experience, Stefanik has been vocal about Israel and its war with Hamas. She has called for a “complete reassessment” of the U.S.’s funding for the UN.
