WASHINGTON — A video of a D.C. teenager ripping the coat off of a Metro rider has gotten a lot of attention online, and transit police say they’re on the case.
In the video posted by Kayla, the teenage boy can be seen forcibly removing a man’s coat while he is sitting on the moving Metro car. As he pulls it off, the teen says to the man, “If you snitch, Imma crush your b**ch a**.” The man then responds, “Dude, I wasn’t snitching.”
The teenager ran to the other side of the Metro car with the man’s coat, and then the man stood up, pointed at him and said “Get him. Dude, I wasn’t snitching, I was just talking about something else. … I’m sorry.”
In response to the man, the teenager came back and attempted to steal the man’s phone. The man then ran away to the other side of the car, protecting his phone and yelling, “Stop it, give me my jacket back.”
Metro Transit Police said they are aware of the video in a Thursday night post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Transit police said that two teenagers were arrested in Maryland for separate crimes Thursday afternoon and that they are working with the D.C. Office of the Attorney General to add the coat robbery charges to the teenager’s arrest.
It is unclear from the video which line this occurred on.
“You think about it and that literally could be you,” said Denver Berry who rides Metro trains every day. “Being by myself or there’s only a few other people in there, I get like cautious, or I sit to where I can see every angle. I could imagine that happening to me and that’s the scary part and I can’t control that. If I’m by myself in a car, I’m by myself in a car.”
The woman who posted the video to social media says the man, seen here in red, had a Canada Goose jacket taken from him. Jackets that can cost thousands of dollars.
“Early February, we were notified by Commander Hickman of MPD that um teens were being targeted for basically the coats off of their back, their shoes. The most vulnerable going to school are being targeted um uh for the things that they’re wearing, and that’s quite alarming,” said Ward 8 ANC Commissioner Tom Donohue.
He forwarded a message to residents on social media showing a list of targeted robbery items, including Canada Goose jackets
“It’s a sign of the times that people are going through, and it’s just unacceptable and I think it’s important that we also think about the places that we’re going and what we’re wearing.”
Berry says, after seeing that video, she will.
“I had like a really expensive bag on me once. I used to use it to go to school and stuff, so I could imagine my bag getting taken,” she said. “I have nice furs that I wear, I could imagine that.”
In a statement sent to us Friday evening, WMATA says it stands in alignment with MPD’s guidance on Canada Goose jackets. Adding the coats have become a target for thieves across the region over the last couple of years.
They also offered these tips to Metro passengers:
- Stay alert
- Identify the emergency communication button located on each end of every rail car
- Keep valuables stowed away out of view
- Report any safety incidents or criminal activity by contacting MTPD at (202) 962-2121 or texting MYMTPD (696873)
