Takeaways: Jahmai Mashack hits game winner to lift No. 5 Vols over No. 6 Alabama

Rick Barnes and Zakai Zeigler desperately tried to call a timeout as Jahmai Mashack dribbled down The Summitt floor.

No. 5 Tennessee basketball had just forced No. 6 Alabama into a five-second violation on its own baseline with 3.8 seconds remaining in a tie game. Barnes wanted to make sure the Vols were going to get one final shot off in a critical matchup with significant NCAA Tournament-seeding ramifications on the line.

The referees didn’t spot Barnes’ attempt at a timeout. It proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Mashack received the inbound from Zeigler, calmly dribbled across mid-court, maneuvered around a Felix Okpara screen and pulled up from well beyond the three-point line. The basketball rattled around the rim for a moment before falling through the bottom of the net to lift Tennessee past Alabama at the buzzer, 79-76.

Tennessee ended the game on a 7-0 run to pull off the come-from-behind win. Mashack was responsible for the final five points to finish with 11 points, six rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists.

Here are our takeaways from Tennessee’s (24-5, 11-5 SEC) thrilling win over Alabama (23-6, 12-4 SEC) on the first Saturday of March to put itself in position to secure the first No. 1 seed in school history.

These takeaways will continue to be updated throughout postgame.
