Sole survivor in stable condition after Cybertruck crash that killed 3 college students home for Thanksgiving

PIEDMONT, Calif. (KGO) – The sole survivor of a deadly crash involving a Cybertruck in California is in stable condition.

The single-vehicle crash killed three college students on Nov. 27 who were home for Thanksgiving.

A fourth college student in the Cybertruck was the sole survivor. The student has not been publicly identified but is said to be in stable condition.

The survivor was pulled from the fiery vehicle by Good Samaritans who witnessed the crash.

Soren Dixon, Krysta Tsukahara and Jack Nelson were identified as the victims who died in the crash.

Dixon attended the University of Southern California, Tsukahara attended the Savannah College of Art and Design, and Nelson attended the University of Colorado Boulder.

Police said the Cybertruck jumped the curb, hit a cement wall, got wedged between the wall and a tree, then burst into flames.

“For this to happen the day before Thanksgiving, nobody could imagine,” said Mehrad Malekpour, a Piedmont High School student. “Piedmont is a very close and tightknit community, and everyone knows each other. It’s almost like a family.”

The victims were recent graduates of Piedmont High. Malekpour didn’t know them personally but says he attended a vigil to show his support.

Shay Ottaviano was a freshman at the school when the victims were seniors. She says she knows the student who survived the crash.

“It’s tragic. I actually knew him. He is so sweet, always a delight to be around, always brings a smile to your face,” she said.

Authorities are still investigating the crash, but they believe the driver may have been going too fast. The police chief said part of the investigation will be to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Officials are still awaiting toxicology reports from the coroner’s office and for a crash report from California Highway Patrol. It will likely be several weeks before that information is available.

Officials said there are no indications the truck had mechanical issues, although they are still trying to determine how it caught fire.

“They will probably look at everything related to the vehicle and try to make some determinations on what may have caused the accident,” said Capt. Chris Monahan with the Piedmont Police Department. “That more than likely may include a complete review of maybe any electronic information that’s in the car, anything else related to the car and then some of the crush dynamics.”

The Cybertruck, which has been on sale for about a year, has been recalled six times for safety problems, most recently on Nov. 5, the Associated Press reports.

At least one of the victims’ funerals has been set for late December at a local church.
