Senate expected to vote on Trump’s OMB nominee after Democrats protest

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Democratic senators pulled a rare all-nighter to protest the nomination of Russell Vought to lead the Office of Management and Budget.

With Republicans in control of the Senate and seemingly united behind Vought, he’s on a path to almost certain confirmation. However, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) says she and her colleagues need to fight his nomination anyways.

“I’m not lying down and playing dead, and I hope nobody else does either,” Warren said.

Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer says Vought’s ties to the controversial right wing ‘Project 2025’ set him apart from the other Trump administration nominees.

“He is far and away the most dangerous to the American people,” Schumer said.

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) warns that conservative playbook includes proposals to cut Medicare and Social Security and give tax breaks to billionaires, which Vought could implement as the director of OMB.

“It’s filled with extreme ideas that would hurt families like yours,” Rosen said.

According to Sen. Warren, the country is already feeling the impact of Vought’s plans with the funding freeze the White House announced last week.

“Russ Vought was the puppet master behind the funding shut down that threw this country into chaos,” Warren said.

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) argues his Democratic colleagues don’t understand that Americans voted for change.

“This is what they’re mad about. That the veil is coming down. Russ Vought is going to be part of this reform movement,” Schmitt said.

Democratic resistance to this nominee and others doesn’t change the fact that Republican’s majority in the Senate gives them the power to confirm all the Trump nominees if they vote together.

Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) says Republicans are determined to get those nominees confirmed as quickly as possible, including Russell Vought.

“We have worked at record pace here in the Senate on nominations,” Lankford said. “If we’re going to deal with spending, and we’re going to make the government more efficient, we’ve got to have leadership of the Office of Management and Budget.”

Senators are expected to vote on Vought’s confirmation at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.
