LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) – Audio from air traffic control detailed the moments leading up to the plane crash that injured five people in Manheim Township, Lancaster County on Sunday afternoon.
The audio from LiveATC appears to reveal that there was an open door on the plane and the pilot requested a return to land at Lancaster Airport. The pilot relayed that they could not hear the air traffic controller due to the wind coming into the aircraft, but requested to land on runway 26.
The air traffic controller confirmed the plane, a Beechcraft Bonanza, was cleared to land at runway 26. A few moments later the air traffic controller called for the plane to “pull up” before requesting emergency services, saying the plane was “down.”
The plane crashed in the parking lot of Brethren Village at approximately 3:18 p.m., damaging several cars. No buildings were damaged and no one on the ground was injured.
The National Traffic Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will both investigate the crash. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said Pennsylvania State Police were assisting, as were other state resources.
