WASHINGTON (TNND) — Following President Donald Trump’s Tuesday address to Congress, MSNBC host Nicole Wallace associated the boy made an honorary Secret Service member with the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol.
Wallace said she hopes DJ Turner, who Trump noted was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, doesn’t die by suicide after defending the Capitol against the president’s supporters.
“I hope he never has to defend the United States Capitol against Donald Trump’s supporters, and if he does, I hope he isn’t one of the six who loses his life to suicide,” Wallace explained.
At least four law enforcement officers who responded to the riot, during which Trump’s supporters broke into the Capitol, have died by suicide. In 2021, some officers testified about the rioters, many of whom Trump pardoned. Wallace said she hopes Turner doesn’t become one of those cops.
“I hope he isn’t one who has to testify against the people who carried out acts of seditious conspiracy and then lived to see Donald Trump pardon those people,” she said.
Trump’s spotlight on Turner also received criticism from MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, who called the president’s action “disgusting.”
“For the record – and this is disgusting – the president made a spectacle out of praising a young man who thus far survived pediatric cancer, as if the president had something to do with that,” she said.
Trump said during his speech that police love Turner and, “tonight, DJ, we’re going to do you the biggest honor of them all.”
“I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service,” the president added.
