Melissa Gilbert Pays Tribute to ‘Sweet Prince’ After His Death

Melissa Gilbert took to social media to share a special tribute to a special colleague. The “When Calls the Heart” star mourned the death of someone she worked with, and adored, on “Little House on the Prairie.”

In her tribute on social media, Gilbert sent her condolences to the family and ended her tribute by writing, “Oh Jack….sweet prince…may flights of angels sing thee to they rest.” She signed it “Your Halfpint.”

On March 21, Gilbert posted two photos and a lengthy note on her Instagram page. She began, “The little house family has lost one of our own. Jack Lilley has passed away. He was 91 years old.”

Gilbert shared, “He also happened to be one of my favorite people on the planet.”

The “Little House on the Prairie” star explained, “He taught me how to ride a horse when I was just a wee little thing. He was so patient with me.”

“He never said no when I would bound up o him squealing, ‘Can we go ride? Please, please, please?’” Gilbert added.

As Gilbert noted, Lilley took on many roles throughout the run of “Little House on the Prairie.” He was a photo double for actor Victor French, who played the character of Isaiah Edwards for several years.

In addition, Gilbert shared that Lilley demonstrated his “absolute brilliance” in the iconic film “Blazing Saddles.”

Gilbert opened up about filming a pilot years later for ABC. She had a role in the western show, and Lilley was there when she showed up on the set the first time. He had a role in the pilot as well.

“Jack always felt like home to me,” Gilbert said.

Many fans left notes of support on Gilbert’s Instagram post.

“Beautiful tribute to a wonderful man. He was always so kind and I looked forward to always talking with him. What an amazing life and an incredible man he was! My condolences to his family,” wrote fellow “Little House” alum Leslie Matthews, who played Etta Plum.

“Oh my goodness. What a wonderful set of memories. Of course I recognize him! I can almost hear him saying ‘Hey Nels,’” a fan wrote.

Someone else added, “I’m so sorry for your loss.❤️ He was like the Where’s Waldo of Little House as he would pop up frequently and to this day we say there’s Ned….we think that’s what his name was as I think it was only mentioned once during the shows entirety.”
