It was all eyes on Kendrick Lamar when he became one of the night’s biggest winners at the 2025 Grammys on Feb. 3 but you might have missed his super rare shoutout to fiancée Whitney Alford in his speech.
The LA-born rapper isn’t one to talk about his personal life, rarely speaking about his relationship with Alford and only offering fleeting glimpses into their decades-long romance, but he did mention her in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment.

“Whitney in the video crip walking,” Lamar said while accepting the Song of the Year honor for “Not Like Us,” his infamous Drake diss track. “We gon’ dedicate that one.”
Lamar was referencing his fiancée’s appearance alongside their two children in the music video for the Grammy-winning song. In the video, Alford can be seen dancing alongside their daughter, Uzi, and their son, Enoch.
Lamar took home five trophies on Sunday night, making him the most awarded artist of this year’s ceremony. He won Best Music Video, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and both Record and Song of the Year.
Lamar and Alford have been together since they were teenagers after meeting in high school in Compton, California. They made their red carpet debut at the Grammys in 2014 and attended the show together again in 2016 and 2018.

In 2015, Lamar confirmed rumors that he proposed to Alford, per People. “I wouldn’t even call her my girl,” he said of their relationship later that year in an interview with Billboard. “That’s my best friend. I don’t even like the term that society has put in the world as far as being a companion — she’s somebody I can tell my fears to.”
Alford appears alongside Lamar and their two children on the cover of his 2022 album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers.
Since then, Alford has become a little more open on social media about her personal life, though still keep her posts to a minimum. She did get candid in a 2022 Father’s Day tribute to Lamar, sharing a photo of him and their kids alongside a lengthy caption about celebrating the men in her life.
“I choose to celebrate them for stepping up instead of stepping out, for providing, for assisting us women, for healing, for showing up physically and most importantly for showing up emotionally,” she wrote.
“I was almost 30 the first time I celebrated Father’s Day and it’s still one of the hardest for me. I know there are many women like me. So men it’s not as important for us to celebrate you, as it is for You to celebrate You. Celebrate your contribution to the next generation. I am grateful for the men that are showing me a different picture, my lens was very narrow before but not anymore.”
She concluded her candid message with, “Happy Father’s Day @kendricklamar.”
