Josh Allen breaks Hall of Famer’s record for most TD passes in Bills playoff history

Josh Allen is done, for now, breaking regular season records. He’s on to playoff records.

The Buffalo Bills quarterback passed Hall of Famer Jim Kelly for most passing touchdowns in franchise playoff history in a 31-7 wild-card victory against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Allen entered the game tied atop the Bills list with 21 playoff touchdown passes. He threw two TDs to surpass Kelly and enters the divisional round with 23 playoff TD passes.

Allen set the record with a dazzling 24-yard strike in the third quarter. He held the ball for nearly 10 seconds trying to make something happen on fourth-and-1 before slinging a ball to a sliding Ty Johnson in the back of the end zone.

Allen eclipsed Kelly despite playing in a half dozen less playoff games. Kelly went threw 21 touchdowns in 17 playoff games, with a 9-8 record.

Allen’s 21 touchdowns have come in 11 playoff games. He is 6-5 in the postseason.

If Kelly’s 17 playoff games seem low for a quarterback who led his team to four straight Super Bowls, it’s because five teams in each conference made the playoffs from 1983 to 1990 before it was increased to six in each conference in 1990. The postseason field was expanded to seven teams in each conference in 2000.

Kelly played from 1986-1996 for the Bills. Buffalo made the playoffs in eight of Kelly’s 11 NFL seasons.

Who has most TD passes in playoff history?

Tom Brady has the most playoff career passing touchdowns with 88. It’s nearly double the two quarterbacks in second place. Joe Montana and Aaron Rodgers each have 45 TD passes in the playoffs.

Allen’s 23 are tied for 17th all-time with Troy Aikman.

Who can Josh Allen pass this year on the all-time list?

Buffalo could play in up to three more playoff games if it reaches the Super Bowl. Allen could jump into the top 10 all-time with a big postseason performance.

Here are Nos. 9 to 15 ahead of Allen: 9. Dan Marino 32; 10. Kurt Warner 31; 11. Terry Bradshaw 30; T12. John Elway 27; T12. Russell Wilson 27; 14. Joe Flacco 26; T15. Donovan McNabb 24; T15. Roger Staubach 24.
