Note: MAJOR spoilers ahead for the series premiere of “Daredevil: Born Again”
“Daredevil: Born Again” is finally here and, thanks to a mid-season creative overhaul, Karen Page and Foggy Nelson are indeed part of it — but not for very long.
When we last see the trio in the season three finale of “Daredevil,” they decide to open a new practice, which Foggy (Elden Henson) pitches on a cocktail napkin, just like he pitched Nelson and Murdock. This time, it’s Nelson, Murdock and Page.
The good news is, “Daredevil: Born Again” makes good on this idea. When we first catch up with the characters again, they are finishing a day of work at Nelson, Murdock and Page, and once again headed to Josie’s.
While Foggy chats up Kirsten (Nikki M. James) at the bar — it’s unclear what happened to Foggy’s previous girlfriend from the original series, Marci Stahl (Amy Rutberg) — Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) and Matt flirt over drinks. However, not too much, taking it too far would be a violation of the “friends code,” as they call it, and no one is above the law.
When Foggy suddenly gets a call from a client, Matt suits up and sprints into action to go protect the client. But while he’s zipping around the city, we learn that said client sold his location out — to Benjamin Pointdexter, aka Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). And sadly, Bullseye doesn’t miss.
Matt gets to him as Daredevil, but not before he pulls the trigger and hits Foggy. As the two battle, Matt listens intently to Foggy’s fading heartbeat as Karen tries to stop the bleeding. But alas, Foggy Nelson meets his devastating end.
A year later, we find both Karen and Matt at Bullseye’s trial, where he earns 11 life sentences. Following the verdict, Karen and Matt have a tense reunion on a bench outside the courtroom, where we learn that she has since moved to San Francisco.
Apparently, in the immediate aftermath of Foggy’s death, Matt was unable to handle his grief (and was probably recovering from some pretty serious wounds after taking all those projectiles from Bullseye) and once again disappeared on Karen. The two are clearly in pain but unable to see past it to patch things up, despite Matt’s pleading.
Leaving Matt with a stray piece of his old Daredevil suit (he has since stopped superhero-ing), Karen heads back for the west coast, and we don’t see her again in the next episode, so it sure feels permanent. We’ll have to see.
“Daredevil: Born Again” is now streaming its first two episodes on Disney+.
