Former Penn State WR signs massive NFL free agent contract

Chris Godwin is staying in Tampa Bay — and he got paid.

Godwin, the former Penn State star wide receiver, is re-signing with the Buccaneers on a three-year, $66 million deal with $44 million guaranteed, according to multiple Monday reports.

Godwin’s new contract could reach a maximum of $72 million with incentives.

Godwin, 29, is now entering his ninth season with Tampa Bay after testing free agency. Though it is a significant contract, the former Nittany Lion reportedly took less money to stay with Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers, who drafted Godwin in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Godwin suffered a dislocated left ankle in Week 7 last season. But before the season-ending injury, he was having perhaps the best year of his career. At the time, Godwin was leading the league with 50 catches. His 575 receiving yards were second-most in the NFL.

This is the third contract of Godwin’s NFL career. He signed as a rookie in 2017 before inking a three-year deal worth $60 million ($40 million guaranteed) in 2022.

Godwin, who had a breakout year during Penn State’s 2016 Big Ten championship run, has been one of the most productive, low-maintenance receivers in the league.

In eight seasons with Tampa Bay, Godwin has accumulated 7,266 yards and 39 touchdowns on 579 receptions.
