Thank God: Doechii won Best Rap Album at the 2025 Grammys for Alligator Bites Never Heal. The win is so well deserved, and so heartwarming, it practically makes suffering through all of those Trevor Noah jokes worth it.
Waddling to the stage in her Über-wide Thom Browne pants, the Swamp Princess accepted her award from Cardi B, her predecessor in rap queendom who won the award six years ago. “This category was introduced in 1989, and two women have won —,” she began, then corrected herself as she absorbed what just happened. “THREE women have won! Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii!” In what will undoubtedly be one of the best speeches of the night — take notes, Taylor — a teary, grateful Doechii thanked her mom and talked about the perseverance the album required: “I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me I would be rewarded and he would show me how good it would get.” And then she gave a heartfelt advice to the Black girls and women watching:
“I wanna tell you, you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are and I’m a testimony.”
The dusty guys nominated could never.
Congratulations, Doechii — I’d like to imagine “that old dude from 2019” and his new boo are tearing up watching you right now.
