MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Crews across Horry County have contained a 100-acre fire in the area of the Lewis Ocean Bay Preserve.
As of around 10 p.m., Horry County Fire Rescue said the fire on Highway 90 and Edge Road was fully contained. HCFR added that persistent smoke will linger in the area and there is potential for flare-ups and visible flames heading into Sunday.
Data from the South Carolina Forestry Commission states the fire got up to 300 acres before it was contained.
The agency said crews will remain on scene and respond to those flare-ups as they arise.
Earlier in the day, Horry County Fire Rescue said its crews were called to the area of Old Highway 90 and Edge Road. The agency also said 20 homes were evacuated as a precaution.
The North Myrtle Beach Fire Department, Horry County Fire Rescue, the South Carolina Forestry Commission, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources were all at the scene.
