Celtics Reportedly Dump Salary In Expected Pre-Deadline Trade

The Celtics had a method to their madness, after all.

Boston has been looking for ways to dump salary while also staying in the title hunt over the last several weeks, and seemingly found out how to do it on Wednesday.

The C’s are sending guard Jaden Springer and a 2030 second-round pick to the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, with the two sides also exchanging heavily protected second-rounders as part of the return.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks provided context to the move on behalf of Boston, reporting that the club’s tax penalty will now decrease from $65.6 million to $50.2 million this summer, while also opening up two roster spots. Springer makes roughly $4 million this season, so the savings are significant.

Springer, 22, never really figured into long-term plans for the Celtics. Joe Mazzulla gave him several opportunities over the last several weeks, though they primarily came as a way for the club to showcase him for interested trade candidates. Springer averaged 1.7 points through 5.4 minutes in 26 appearances this season.
