INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Alphonso Davies left with an undisclosed injury just 12 minutes into Canada’s Concacaf Nations League third-place match against the U.S. on Sunday. The Bayern Munich left back and Canada captain went down twice, and both times he required attention from Canada’s medical staff before exiting.
As Davies left the pitch and continued toward Canada’s locker room, he appeared to be limping. According to Canadian broadcaster TSN, Davies later returned from Canada’s locker room and told the outlet he’s “good.” Ahead of the third-place match, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch said multiple Canada players suffered knocks against Mexico in the Thursday night’s semifinal.
The Athletic observed that Davies was the first player to leave Canada’s final training session ahead of the game against the U.S., on Saturday. All of his teammates remained, completing different drills. Davies struggled with injuries earlier this year. He suffered a hamstring strain during a 3-0 loss to Feyenoord in the Champions League on January 22, and the injury caused him to miss six matches for Bayern.
The 24-year-old also missed Canada’s previous international window – two legs against Suriname in the Nations League quarterfinals – with fatigue.
Davies’ injury could cast doubt on his short-term future with Bayern Munich. The current Bundesliga leaders have upcoming league matches against St. Pauli and Augsburg before the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Inter Milan on April 8.
