The Celtics, as expected, will be shorthanded as they face the 76ers on Thursday as part of a back-to-back. The C’s are coming off a win over the Blazers on Wednesday where they were without three starters, though Payton Pritchard and Derrick White made NBA history along the way.
The C’s have six total players listed on the injury report, four of them being out while the other two are questionable. Jaylen Brown (right knee), Jrue Holiday (mallet finger), Kristaps Porzingis (illness) and Al Horford (toe) are all out. Jayson Tatum (shoulder) and Sam Hauser (right ankle sprain) are questionable.
The outs aren’t too surprising overall. Horford played Wednesday, so he doesn’t play the second game of back-to-backs. Brown has dealt with some minor injuries, so getting him a rest day against the Sixers also makes sense after playing in the Blazers win. Holiday will miss his fourth straight game with the mallet finger.
The Porzingis situation continues to be one worth monitoring going forward. He’ll sit his fourth straight game with the illness, including five of six games now. Initially, he was a late scratch for the Raptors win last week then he played the next day in Detroit. But since then, he’s sat every game. It’s unclear when Porzingis will be able to play at this point as he deals with the illness. C’s coach Joe Mazzulla said this week the big man went through a walkthrough Tuesday.
Tatum sat the Wednesday win over the Blazers with the right shoulder issue. It’s likely the team rested him at this point in the season, though his status for the Sixers game remains up in the air. Hauser also tweaked that right ankle against the Blazers, so that’s also worth monitoring, though the questionable tag is noteworthy.
Regardless, expect the Celtics to dip deeper into their bench for production. They already had to do that against the Blazers. Guys like Torrey Craig, Jordan Walsh, Neemias Queta and more will likely get more minutes Wednesday.
The Sixers have multiple guys listed on their injury report as that’s been the tale of their season. Former MVP Joel Embiid is done for the season while Tyrese Maxey will also sit Thursday’s game. Maxey hurt his back earlier this week and will miss his second straight game. Paul George (groin) and Justin Edwards (ankle) are also questionable on the Sixers injury report for the Celtics game.
