TIMELINE: Snow arrives across the DMV, winter storm warning and latest snow forecast

WASHINGTON, D.C. (7News) — The First Alert Weather Team is on WINTER ALERT Tuesday as snow moves in and will lead to travel disruptions, school and business closures.

Snowfall Timeline

  • Happening Now: Light snow begins
  • Tuesday Evening: Moderate to heavy snow at times
  • Wednesday before 4 a.m.: Snow ends
  • Wednesday Morning: Lingering flurries
  • Wednesday Afternoon: Cloudy and dry
  • Wednesday Evening: Wintry mix to cold rain

How much snow will fall?

Confidence remains high for four to six inches around the D.C. metro. Isolated higher totals above six inches are expected south of I-66. Communities in northern Maryland are likely to see two to four inches of snow.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the D.C. metro until 7 a.m. Wednesday. A winter weather advisory has been posted along the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania due to less snow expected.

Snow will rapidly draw to a close early Wednesday. About a 12-hour lull is anticipated before another round of potentially disruptive weather arrives.

Temperatures will slowly rise this evening and remain above freezing. Another round of precipitation begins after a wintry mix with freezing rain and sleet northwest of I-95 this evening before transitioning to all rain after 7 p.m. Additional winter weather alerts may be issued by the National Weather Service for areas northwest of D.C.

Snowfall Impacts

Temperatures are not expected to be super cold but stay close to or slightly below freezing. We will likely see a wet, heavy type of snow that compacts, and this will keep road conditions better than the last round of snow, allowing treatment to work throughout the week.

However, plan on snow-covered roads by Tuesday evening. Road conditions will quickly improve Wednesday afternoon as temperatures rise and rain returns. Many schools will likely remain closed Wednesday.

Lingering showers on Thursday will draw to a close early in the day and skies will begin to clear. Temperatures will reach the 40s with a southwesterly wind.
