Joe Burrow, NFL leader in passing yards and TD passes, passed over for AP’s MVP award

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow did not win AP Most Valuable Player during Thursday night’s NFL Honors awards special. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was named the league MVP.

Burrow was one of five finalists for the award, along with Allen, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Saquon Barkley, the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff and the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson.

Burrow, who did not receive any first-place votes, was the only finalist not introduced Thursday night by a teammate or representative of his own franchise.

Burrow finished the NFL season as the league leader in passing yards and touchdown passes. Earlier in the night, he did win AP Comeback Player of the Year.

“I don’t think there was anybody in the league playing better football than I was this year,” Burrow told Adam Schein on Thursday.

Burrow, who was seeking his first AP MVP award, spoke during the Pro Bowl Games about teammates he’d like to see get paid what they deserve.

On ESPN’s “First Take” last week, Chris Canty insisted that he doesn’t believe Burrow is among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks.

“We can make it happen,” Burrow told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Saturday. “We can make it happen. And it just has to be right for everybody involved. I know the players want to make it work. We all want to be together. So I don’t see it not working out, but we’ll see.”

Burrow made his first Pro Bowl appearance. It was the second time he’s been selected. On the AFC’s first possession of the game, Burrow found Ja’Marr Chase for a 4-yard touchdown. AFC coach Peyton Manning joked earlier that he wanted to play Burrow the entire game to give his squad a better chance to beat the NFC, coached by his brother, Eli.

Burrow told Chase and teammate Trey Hendrickson during Sunday’s flag game that a mascot named Blue was talking to him.
