Rise to prominence

During the mid-eighties, Moore came into the spotlight for performances in key films such as the 1985 coming-of-age drama St Elmo’s Fire, a role that propelled her into stardom. She, alongside peers Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Molly Ringwald, went on to become known as the ‘Brat Pack’, a group of young actors who were fixtures in 1980s films.

In 1991, Moore received her first Golden Globe nomination for her role as grieving artist Molly Jensen in Ghost. The film became a cultural phenomenon, as her famous pottery scene with Patrick Swayze solidified her status as a leading actress.
She received another nomination in 1997 for her role in the HBO film If These Walls Could Talk, which she executive produced.

Leading lady

Moore’s career in the Nineties was marked by significant successes, thanks to a continued slew of box office hits and critically acclaimed roles. She showcased her acting prowess in a number of films such as A Few Good Men (1992), Indecent Proposal (1993), and Disclosure (1994).
By 1996, she was one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, earning millions for her role in Striptease. By the decade’s end, she stepped back from acting to focus on raising her three daughters with then-husband Bruce Willis.
Back in action

After her hiatus, Moore gradually returned to acting in the 2000s with supporting roles in films such as Charlie’s Angel: Full Throttle, Bobby and Mr Brooks. In 2019, she published her bestselling memoir Inside Out, which delves into her struggles with addiction and childhood trauma. She made a surprise appearance at Paris Fashion Week in 2021, walking for Fendi’s haute couture show.

During Moore’s acceptance speech, she reflected on some of the challenges she faced throughout her career, including being labelled a ‘popcorn actress’ by a producer—a comment that left her grappling with insecurity.
She shared, “In those moments when we don’t think we are smart enough, or pretty enough, or skinny enough, or pretty enough, or successful enough or basically just not enough I had a woman say to me ‘just know you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’”
