TGL golf recap: Tiger Woods makes debut; LAGC runs away

Tonight’s TGL match, the second for the new indoor golf league, has just as much hype as the first. That’s because Tiger Woods makes his debut with Jupiter Links Golf Club vs. Los Angeles Golf Club.

Woods founded TGL with Rory McIlroy, and the newly built SoFi Center is in Palm Beach Gardens, a short half-hour drive south of his Jupiter Island home. His team was picked to finish last in the league, however, and he, Max Homa and Kevin Kisner will look to change those odds against Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose and Sahith Theegala.

Match play breakdown for Holes 10-15

Tiger Woods and Justin Rose led off the match play portion of the competition. Jupiter Links threw the hammer to start the hole, only for LAGC to throw it before Rose’s 5-foot par putt to win the hole. The putt was pushed to the right, keeping the score at 8-1.

But the boat race continued after Kevin Kisner hit his tee shot on the 11th out of bounds, opening the door for Collin Morikawa to win the hole. Sahith Theegala and Max Homa tied the 12th.

Woods put his tee shot on 13 in the water, then his dropped third shot in the greenside bunker and his fourth remained in the bunker. Rose comfortably completed the 13th in four to take a 10-1 lead.

Kisner drew a laugh from the players and crowd when his second shot on the 14th was a bunker shot that came out way too hot and deflected off of the flag stick. His subsequent prayer chip horseshoed out of the hole. Morikawa calmly completed the par-3 hole in three shots as LAGC took an 11-1 lead.

LAGC closes out alternate shot in style

On the seventh hole, neither tee shot on the par-3 hit the green, but Kevin Kisner’s chip from 66 feet away landed close enough for LAGC to concede the par putt. Collin Morikawa’s chip left a 9-foot par putt for Sahith Theegala, who nailed it to tie the hole.

Then on the eighth, Justin Rose dropped a 14-footer to take a 6-1 lead. Both teams found greenside bunkers on the ninth hole, though it was in two for LAGC and in three for Jupiter Links. LAGC threw the hammer and Jupiter Links accepted, but Tiger Woods’ 8-foot putt for par to tie the hole was pushed right, making it 8-1 after the alternate shot session.

Theegala eagled the final hole while Homa hit his second shot on the 729-yard hole out of bounds. LAGC won the match, 12-1.

Tiger Woods’ approach shot helps Jupiter Links get on the board

On the sixth hole, Tiger Woods’ approach shot landed and settled 10 feet from the hole while Justin Rose’s shot trickled off the green for LAGC, which was already recovering from Sahith Theegala’s tee shot that went out of bounds. LAGC conceded the hole, cutting Jupiter Links’ deficit to 5-1.

Tiger Woods misses chance to get on the board

The hammer was thrown after LAGC’s tee shot on the fourth, and was accepted for a two-point chance. But Tiger Woods’ 7-foot putt to keep the hole square squirted to the left, deepening Jupiter Links Golf Club’s deficit to 5-0 after four holes.

On the fifth hole, Woods sank a 7-foot par putt, as guest TV analyst Serena Williams chided her pal, “finally,” as Woods’ mother looked on. But Justin Rose shook off a Jupiter Links GC timeout in an attempt to ice him to since a similar putt and keep the score 5-0.

LAGC extends early lead after three holes

Tiger Woods slipped a 42-foot birdie putt just left of the hole on the third, and then the Los Angeles Golf Club threw the hammer, making the hole worth two points. Justin Rose then sank his 8-foot putt to make it 3-0 after three hole of the nine-hole alternate shot portion of the competition.

Both teams ‘get wet’ on second hole

The 586-foot second hole presented a big challenge. And both teams’ second shot — by Jupiter Links GC’s Max Homa and LAGC’s Sahith Theegala — landed in the virtual water. However, Tiger Woods also found the drink on Jupiter’s fourth shot, opening the door for LAGC to win its first point.

Tiger Woods tees off with a bang

Tiger Woods throws the hammer just before teeing off on the first hole — meaning this opener is worth two points. Justin Rose sank the 4-foot putt for par and then conceded the par putt to Jupiter Links, keeping the score tied after one hole.

TGL stands for TMRW Golf League, a competitive league of interactive golf started by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Mike McCarley, CEO of TMRW Sports. The league is made of current PGA Tour members, including major champions and those in the top-10 world rankings.

Matches feature two teams of three golfers and include 15 holes. Players tee off from a mat into a giant simulator screen that incorporates real fairway, rough and sand surfaces to hit from. When the ball lands about 50 yards away from the pin, players will transition to the “Green Zone,” a 3,800-square-foot rotating green that includes more than 600 actuators to make each hole unique.
