A fun read! This was an enjoyable little story that managed to fit a couple of twists into its humble 13 pages. After regularly reading 500+ page tomes and even fantasy novellas bordering on 200 pages, it was nice to read something all finished within half an hour. It’s hard to give you the plot overview without just telling you what happens but this is an adult bedtime fairy story (although I don’t see why teenagers and even a little younger couldn’t read it) and that’s how I think it should be approached. We’re all kids at heart to some extent and many of us enjoyed fantasy that could be started and finished in bed – so here you are!I like how the story is rounded up nicely yet there could be a whole new adventure that comes from it, with a knight full of anger and the need for love, a shape shifting dragon in search of peace. There is potential here for a nice cozy fantasy or a full on adventure (maybe both) – the directions are endless. Equally it’s a nice story (despite one seemingly innocent character getting an arrow!) that would still be satisfying as it is.The cover is charming and after finishing the book you get that charmed feel, really satisfying and wholesome. Kings are pandered to enough and I like how the knight in this story does no such thing!I do have to point out that the knight, technically, is you. I don’t think I’d have been able to become fully immersed in a novella or full length novel with a 2nd person perspective (maybe I’d get used to it though) but it was fine with me for such a short story! And it did help to give the story an immediacy being in this style because it’s in the present tense. Bonus points because as the title suggests, the Knight saves the Dragon – less killing of dragons and more saving of dragons in fantasy please!

You may deliberate whether to spend 99c/99p on a book so short, but you’d spend it on a can of coke that lasts a few mouthfulls or chuck it in a busker’s hat after listening to 2 minutes of guitar playing, so why not toss a coin to your author in exchange for a bedtime story?

This was another wonderful short story from Rebecca. I don’t know how she packs so much feeling and detail in so few words! This was a quirky fairytale with many unforeseen twists that had me laugh out loud several times. It was unexpected, fun, held lot of wonder, and oddly a critical voice I deeply appreciated. As the title suggests, it’s about a knight who ventures out – not to save the princess, but to save the dragon. The unorthodox approach to this common trope was fantastic and with so little effort, Rebecca solidifies herself as Queen of Short Stories. As just a 10 min read there are really no reason to not spoil yourself with this enchanting, twisting, and uncommon fairytale.

Fun little story

I always enjoy Crunden’s short stories. You never know what you’re going to find. This was a fun use of 2nd person POV and twists on some fantasy tropes.

A fairy tale with a twist!

Crunden is back with another wonderful short story, this time set in an unsettled kingdom with a vengeful knight and a dragon shifter. If you’re a big anti-monarch, you’ll love this. Though it was short, it packs a punch and carries a clear message. Plus I think the knight and the dragon might be boyfriends. Probably. I hope.

A delightfully fun short rich in details! Always love a story of dragons and underdogs rebelling against power. <3 I just wish it had been longer and more detailed at the end, I was so curious to see what would become of the country and the characters!

2nd POV is a style I’ve always struggled to connect with emotionally. And yet Rebecca Crunden has somehow managed to come out swinging both times and really taken me aback. This is a tale that captures the classic fairytale perfectly; the whimsical charms as well as those grisly turns, and that made this a true joy to read. Possibly one of her very best yet!

Excellent story in 2nd personI’ve come to only expect excellent content from Rebecca and once again, she’s done it. Being able to do short stories is a talent I envy. And it’s in 2nd person! One, this is rare and two, it’s so hard to get right. But she does it so well, without it reading awkwardly. She’s one of the few I can read 2nd person with! And the story! I love how you know there’s going to be a twist but you’re not sure what. Then, when it comes, it makes you smile in the best way.

Absolutely include this gem on your list

This short story written by Rebecca Crunden is a rare gem. Crafted in the second person it is unique and brisk. It bleeds heart and carries a strong theme with extreme skill.

I loved the subversion of tropes and the fast paced plot told in 10 pages. This is the perfect standalone short story with a satisfying conclusion to accompany a rollicking plot.

Rebecca Crunden nails 2nd person pov for me every single time. There’s just something about the writing, pacing, and descriptions that work for me. There’s a beautiful natural rhythm. If you’re looking for a quick bedtime story that can be read under 30 minutes, look no further.

A delightful read

I’m always pro-dragon & this was a fun short story! Details are rich & the characters leap from the page.

A real pleasure to read, this short story takes classic fairytale ingredients then flips them upside-down into something completely new. Superb writing and worldbuilding– Rebecca Crunden has shown again why she’s a must-read author for fans of fantasy, and this is quite possibly my favourite story from her yet.

A charming fantasy story told in second person (!!) where you’re a knight off to save a princess … only saving isn’t really in the plan and the dragon is much more than it seems at first. Great pacing pulled me right through the story. I really enjoyed the twist on the knight saving the princess from the dragon trope. Perfect for fans of the movie Damsel.

Sometimes less is more. This exquisitely written short story feels like a fully realised narrative set in a world of real characters and history. The skillfull use of the second person, present tense viewpoint keeps the reader at the heart of the action while the story turns all expectations on their heads. To paraphrase the text: exquisite job she did; and all it takes is eleven pages.

Beautiful little story

I love a good bit of description, trope subversion, and interesting framing. This story has all of those things. Read it if your tastes are anything like mine.

Knight Saves the Dragon is an enjoyable short story that turns the lore of dragons (well, some of it) on its head and subverts well entrenched tropes. The writing is crisp and easy to read, and the dragon is quite wel characterized. If I had any complaint, it was that the second person narrative was a bit unusual and did not really add much; however, it wasn’t bad, either, which is usually how I feel about the second person. This one is well worth the price!

A familiar tale that is spun on its head.I thoroughly enjoyed this short story, the writing was imaginative and captured scenes well. I could picture the scenes vividly in my minds eye, this to me, is a sign of fantastic writing.Even though the clue is in the title, I like when tales are twisted and molded from something different to the norm; subverting expectations. For the very fair price, it is well worth the admission for a short but entertaining read.

5/5*

Review of The Knight Saves the Dragon by Rebecca CrundenWhat it says on the title. The Knight who is sent to rescue the cruel daughter of a tyrannical king decides to do away with her and her father with the help of the dragon, and then to run off with him. This was a tiny story, but very enjoyable. The prose is beautiful, and I loved the way the whole book is written in the second person, which isn’t seen often.A very nice tale.

WowI had no idea short stories may be this good. The way it’s told is well crafted and I could feel like sitting in front of a blazing fire in old house listening to old man’s tale. Author’s passion for writing and telling stories is evident. It grabs you and won’t let you go till the end.

In other words I loved it.

This was a very fun and quick read. I think the last time I read a 2nd person POV book was the Goosebumps choose your own adventure books, but I think it was implemented fantastically in this book. The prose is beautiful and I think the amount of world building fit into only 13 pages is a testament to Rebecca’s master of the craft.

Hell hath no fury like a dragon scorned

Short, but with a lot of twists and turns. It’s not a cozy subversion of knights vs dragons, but it was a great read to fill in an afternoon of time.

A gorgeous story

I loved how much was imparted, how real the world felt on so few words, I had that groggy feeling one sometimes gets after immersing oneself in a story, magical, Inhope they find the places.

A twist on knights and dragons!Rebecca creates a wonderful, and quick tale that turns the usual knight saving the princess tale around and adds a darker but amazing twist.

It’s a fast read but one that keeps you immersed from start to finish. It’s worth the read!!

I was genuinely curious of a second POV book and the concept of saving a dragon. Good twists for a short story. Didn’t disappoint.

What’s better than a fairy tale? A fairy tale with a delightful twist. This was a fun story to read, and re-read many times, and I love a good dragon story.
