Sunita Williams, with astronaut Butch Wilmore, came back on Earth on March 19, 2025, after a nine-month, unscheduled mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The mission was initially supposed to be a short one to make tests of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. Due to technology challenges, the astronauts were stretched, and the brief visit became an unusual space odyssey that was subjected to international scrutiny and triggered intense debates regarding NASA’s backup plans and the trustworthiness of the Starliner.

Williams and Wilmore had come in on their first mission with plans to remain there for only a week’s time. However, owing to some unexpected technical problems with the Starliner spacecraft, they remained almost nine months on the ISS. This prolonged stay saw their space tour making headlines across the globe, thereby making it among the longest mission experiences for NASA astronauts in recent years.

Sunita Williams comes from a multicultural background. Her father, Deepak Pandya, is from Jhulasan, Gujarat, but migrated to the United States to study and seek professional advancement. He graduated with his M.D. during the 1950s and later worked for the medical community as a researcher subsequently. His contributions at Case Western Reserve University’s Department of Anatomy and various hospitals across the nation reflect his dedication towards science and education.

Sunita’s mother, Slovenian-American Ursuline Bonnie Zalokar, has always been supportive of her daughter’s commitment to space travel. In interviews, she spoke about being proud of what Sunita has achieved, such as her recent record-breaking stay in space. She said that she is pleased to see her daughter doing something she enjoys and that her commitment to space flights fills her with pride.

Sunita Williams’ path to being an astronaut started with an interest in science and flight. She initially wished to be a veterinarian doctor, but when she looked at the U.S. Naval Academy, where her brother was studying, she became motivated to be in the Navy as a career. Williams turned into a U.S. Navy Captain and was chosen to be a NASA astronaut in 1998.

Sunita’s initial space flight was in December 2006 on the Space Shuttle Discovery. Her first mission saw her spend 195 days on the ISS, serving as part of Expeditions 14 and 15. In 2012, she again went to space, and this time, she became the second female astronaut to lead the ISS.

Among her many accomplishments, Sunita is the first human ever to have run a marathon in space. She has also been the commander of the ISS on her second mission and has done spacewalks, in which she snapped the iconic photo of herself.

Proud to be Indian, Sunita Williams has taken representations of her country to space, a Ganesha figurine and samosas, in her strong identification with Indian culture. She has also visited India on occasion, including after her space flights in 2007 and 2013. In 2008, she received the Padma Bhushan, India’s second highest civilian award.
