If tornados weren’t enough… Earthquake hits near Magee

MAGEE, Miss. (WLBT) – If Saturday’s severe weather wasn’t enough, residents near Magee experienced a tremor.

On Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed a 3.0-magnitude earthquake just under 5.6 miles east northeast of Magee.

The quake occurred around 1:49 p.m. and was about 6.5 miles underground.

“That’s what we’re hearing. Nobody has felt it,” said John Kilpatrick, director of the Simpson County Emergency Management Agency. “We’ve gotten no reports of damage or anything.”

It’s one of five earthquakes reported in the United States so far on Saturday. Others occurred in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Glen Elder, Kansas, and Stanton, Texas.

The last earthquake in Mississippi was back in November, when a 2.5-magnitude quake was recorded in Madison County.
