Patriots sign Pro Bowl pass rusher with ties to Mike Vrabel

Mike Vrabel is reuniting with a Pro Bowler, and the Patriots pass rush is about to get better.

According to a source, the Patriots are signing edge rusher Harold Landry to a 3-year contract worth $43.5 million with $26 million in guaranteed money. The deal can be worth up to $48 million.

Landry, 28, was released by the Tennessee Titans this week, which meant he was eligible to sign with a team before free agency started on Monday at noon. Last season, he led the Titans in sacks with nine to go with 71 tackles, 15 quarterback hits, and 15 tackles for loss.

Landry reunites with Vrabel, who drafted the Boston College product in the second round in 2018. The edge rusher was very productive in Vrabel’s defensive unit. In 2021, Landry made a career-high 12 sacks along with 22 quarterback hits, 75 tackles, and 11 tackles for loss. That earned him Pro Bowl honors.

In seven NFL seasons, Landry led the Titans in sacks four times – in 2019 (9), 2020 (5.5), 2021 (12), and last season (9). He finished second in Tennessee in sacks with 10.5 in 2023. That marked Vrabel’s last year with the Titans.

Landry fits an immediate need for the Patriots as their defense finished last in the NFL in sacks in 2024. The outside linebacker’s knowledge of the system, which will be run by Terrell Williams, made him an obvious free-agent target for New England. He could be an immediate starter and impact player for his former coach.

Last year, after the Patriots traded Matthew Judon, the defense struggled to get to the quarterback. Keion White and Deatrich Wise led the team in sacks with five.

To put it in perspective, Landry would’ve led the Patriots in sacks (9) and tackles for loss (15) last season. His 15 quarterback hits were one less than White’s 16.

The Titans gave Landry and his agent permission to seek a trade, but that didn’t materialize due to the pass rusher’s $17.5 million base salary. Tennessee cleared that same amount off their salary cap when they released Landry on Friday.

Two days later, the Patriots signed their first external veteran free agent of 2025.
