Late last month, Lester Holt, the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News” for a decade, announced his plans to step down from the broadcast at the beginning of the summer.
After a decade on the show, Holt will continue with his full-time role at “Dateline” where he’s the principal anchor. He initially took over as anchor of “Nightly News” in June 2015 after a lengthy stint steering co-anchoring “Weekend TODAY.”
“A smile comes to my face when I think that with Nightly News, and Dateline, I have now anchored two of the most successful and iconic television news programs in broadcast history,” Holt said in a statement. “As a 20-year-old radio reporter on the police beat chasing breaking news around San Francisco, I could never have imagined my career path would unfold in the way it has. What an amazing ride.”
After taking a week to process the news, NBC revealed Holt’s replacement as the new host of “NBC Nightly News.” Tom Llamas will succeed Holt as anchor and managing editor of the nightly news broadcast when the longtime host steps down over the summer.
“Anchoring ‘NBC Nightly News’ is a profound honor and one that carries tremendous responsibility,” Llamas said in a statement. “I look forward to working with the world class journalists at ‘Nightly News’ and ‘Top Story’ to bring viewers the most important stories every night.”
“Lester Holt is a great man and one of the most trusted broadcasters of our time. Just likeLester, I promise to be devoted to our viewers and dedicated to the truth.”
Llamas, who has served as fill-in anchor for Holt at “NBC Nightly News” since 2021, will continue working on “Top Story with Tom Llamas.”
