Raiders, Maxx Crosby set market for Aidan Hutchinson with record-breaking deal

One of the biggest checkmarks on the Detroit Lions’ 2025 offseason to-do list is to extend elite pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a new deal. On Wednesday, the first domino of the defensive end market fell, with the Las Vegas Raiders handing Maxx Crosby a three-year, $106.5 million deal per multiple reports. That’s a $34.5 million a year average, breaking the previous record of any NFL player on defense. Also, astoundingly, it includes $91.5 million guaranteed, or about 86% of the added money.

Despite coming off an injury, it’s possible Hutchinson breaks some of those records. He’s (24) significantly younger than Crosby (27), he produced the same amount of sacks last season (7.5) despite playing seven fewer games than Crosby, and this will be Hutchinson’s first contract beyond his rookie deal.

But as Adam Schefter pointed out, Hutchinson is just one of many edge defenders who are in line for giant paydays this offseason. Trey Hendrickson, Myles Garrett, T.J. Watt, and Micah Parsons are all expected to ask for—and likely get—new deals this year.

If the Lions or Hutchinson aren’t comfortable getting a deal done this year, Detroit could always extend their negotiating period by exercising Hutchinson’s fifth-year option. That would essentially be a one-year, $19.9 million extension that would get him under contract through the 2026 season.

As of now, it’s not clear where negotiations lie between Hutchinson and the Lions. Last week at the NFL Combine, Lions general manager Brad Holmes gave a vague update.

“We have one that’s due for an extension and we’ve already kind of gotten to the planning stages about him already,” Holmes said.
