Sam Hubbard, a cornerstone of the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense, has retired at 29. Hubbard, a native of Ohio, spent seven seasons as a hometown hero, culminating in iconic moments like the “Fumble in the Jungle” in the 2022 playoffs. Hubbard’s legacy of passion and dedication to the Bengals will be remembered fondly by fans.
In a move that has stunned fans and teammates alike, Sam Hubbard — the heart and soul of the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense — announced his retirement at the age of 29. After seven seasons and a career built entirely in his hometown, the defensive end is hanging up his cleats, leaving behind a legacy that Bengals fans won’t soon forget.
Sam Hubbard’s story reads like a sports fairytale. Born and raised in Southwest Ohio, he played high school football at Archbishop Moeller before heading to Ohio State for college ball. In 2018, his dream came full circle when the Bengals selected him in the third round of the NFL Draft — and from that moment on, it was orange and black for life.
“Cincinnati has always been, and will always be, home to my family and me,” Hubbard wrote in his heartfelt retirement post on social media. “I bled orange and black before I ever put on a Bengals jersey.”
Spending his entire career in one uniform was something Hubbard cherished, signing off with, “I am a Bengal for life.”
Sam Hubbard wasn’t just a player — he was one of their own. To fans, he was more than a pass rusher; he was the hometown hero who fought for his city every time he stepped on the field.
Over 104 regular-season games — including 88 consecutive starts from 2019 to 2024 — he stacked up 38.5 sacks, 16 pass deflections, and six forced fumbles. His stats were solid, but his memorable moments are what truly cemented his place in Bengals history.
No one will ever forget the legendary “Fumble in the Jungle” — Hubbard’s most iconic play during the 2022 playoffs. In a wild-card showdown against the Baltimore Ravens, he scooped up a goal-line fumble by quarterback Tyler Huntley and bolted 98 yards for a touchdown — the longest postseason score in Bengals history. That single moment electrified Who Dey Nation and became an instant classic.
While he didn’t specify his next steps, it’s clear that his ties to Cincinnati won’t be fading anytime soon. Whether he remains involved in football, community work, or something entirely new, fans can rest assured that Hubbard’s impact on the city and team will linger long past his final game.
For now, Bengals fans are left reflecting on his incredible journey — from a Cincinnati kid with big dreams to a local legend who gave everything he had to his team and his city.
Thank you, Sam Hubbard. A Bengal for life, indeed.
