WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — A member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the Houston area was removed from President Donald Trump’s address to the joint session of Congress Tuesday night.
Congressman Al Green (D) was escorted out by the Sergeant at Arms after House Speaker Mike Johnson warned him about being disruptive.
The removal came early on in the address.
“The presidential election of Nov. 5 was a mandate like has not been seen in many decades,” Trump said as he began his speech.
“You have no mandate,” Democratic Rep. Al Green countered.
Republicans quickly jumped to their feet with chants of “USA! USA!”
Green was standing and yelling toward the president. Johnson called on the Sergeant at Arms to restore order.
Republican members cheered at his removal, shouting “Get out!” and “Goodbye!” at the lawmaker.
Green shouted, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” at Trump before police escorted him from the chamber.
Green has called for Trump’s impeachment in the weeks since his inauguration.
Green represents Texas’ 9th Congressional District, which covers south and southwest Harris County, including Houston. Green is in his 11th term in Congress.
Like the State of the Union, lawmakers cheered or booed along party lines. Republicans, like Vice President J.D. Vance and Speaker Johnson, seated behind the president, cheered loudly during the speech.
Democrats booed some of Trump’s statements and references to people like Trump’s advisor Elon Musk. Some Democrats appeared bored, like Senator Elizabeth Warren, who was seen on camera typing on her phone. Some Democratic lawmakers held signs saying, “False.”
