Andrew Garfield thanks Goldie Hawn for bringing late mother joy in emotional Oscars moment

Andrew Garfield honored Goldie Hawn, and his late mother, in an emotional moment at the Oscars.

Garfield and Hawn were paired to present at the Oscars for best animated short film and feature film. During their introduction, the “Amazing Spider-Man” star, 41, thanked Hawn on behalf of his mom, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2019.

“There’s a person who gave my mother during her life the most joy, the most comfort, and tonight, I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart,” Garfield said. “That person is Goldie Hawn.”

He continued, “I can feel her smiling at us at this moment. You’ve given us movies full of joy, you’ve lifted our spirits, and you’ve made us feel that all was right with the world, over and over again.”

Hawn got emotional during Garfield’s tribute and told the actor she was touched. The “Death Becomes Her” star also said she was “so lucky” to get to make movies and make people laugh, quipping, “Maybe some didn’t, but that’s OK.”

Since his mother’s death in 2019, Garfield has frequently paid tribute to her during interviews and television appearances. In a viral clip last year, the actor reflected on grief with Elmo from “Sesame Street.”

“I’m doing OK, you know … I’m just thinking about my mom today. You know, she passed away not too long ago, and I just miss her. I miss her a lot,” Garfield said. When Elmo expressed condolences, Garfield said that it is “actually kind of OK to miss somebody” because the sadness is “kind of a gift, a lovely thing to feel in a way because it means you really loved somebody when you miss them.”

In October, Garfield told USA TODAY that working on his film “We Live in Time,” which deals with terminal illness, felt like part of his “healing process.”

“It didn’t feel like work; it became a vehicle for me to explore what life was all about now, after living for 40 years,” he said. “I realized there’s more life to live, and I want to do it well.”

What did Goldie Hawn win an Oscar for?

Both Hawn and Garfield have a history with the Oscars.

Hawn, who attended Sunday’s ceremony with partner Kurt Russell, won the Oscar for best supporting actress in 1970 for her performance in “Cactus Flower.” She was nominated again for best actress in 1981 for “Private Benjamin.”

Garfield, meanwhile, has been nominated for best actor twice — for “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Tick, Tick… Boom!” — but has not won.
