Multiple Sixers single out Quentin Grimes in career night vs. Warriors

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers needed a win in the worst way on Saturday when they played host to the Golden State Warriors. On a night when the focus was mostly on the absence of Joel Embiid as it was Philadelphia’s first game since the news he’d be done for the season, Quentin Grimes came to the rescue.

Grimes scored a career-high 44 points on a ridiculous 18-for-24 shooting and shot 6-for-9 from deep in a 126-119 win over the Warriors. If he would have shot better than 2-for-8 from the foul line, he would have scored 50 points in this one.

It was a performance the Sixers desperately needed and he received a lot of praise from his teammates afterward.

“I mean, he’s a shooter,” Paul George said after the win. “I thought he did a little bit of everything, too. Not even just shooting. His ability to attack, create shots for himself, get downhill, finish at the rim. I think he did everything but make free throws, but he was special. We needed every basket and we need that aggressive Quentin if we’re gonna get some steam going down this last couple of 20 something games. We’re gonna need that aggressive Quentin going down the stretch.”

The win snapped a 9-game losing skid for the Sixers, and most importantly, moved them to within 2.5 games back of the Chicago Bulls for the final play-in tournament spot in the Eastern Conference. If it were not for Grimes coming to the rescue, the Sixers don’t win that game on Saturday.

“Just super energetic,” Kelly Oubre Jr. said of Grimes. “A great pop for us. We needed each and every bucket that he dropped tonight and they all came at critical times in the game when we needed something so super proud of him. We’ve been grinding for a good nine, 10 day stretch here so to be able to do that and come out here against one of the faster paced teams in the league is amazing.”

The 44 points comes after Grimes scored only three points on 1-for-4 shooting in a loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday. The Sixers need more of this type of performance from him as they continue to move forward with their season.

“Just came out being aggressive,” Grimes explained. “I think last time, I think, the game in New York I didn’t come out as aggressive as I should have and we kinda took our foot off the gas at the end, but most importantly come out here being aggressive and try and help my team get a win.”

The Sixers will now look to keep things moving in the right direction when they take on the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday.
