JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Six people were killed, and nearly 30 injured after powerful storms swept through much of the South on Saturday.
The first round of storms brushed through Mississippi late Friday night, leaving three injured and hospitalized in Grenada County, Mississippi.
According to Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, six deaths have been reported so far due to the weekend storms, with three additional people currently missing.
Twenty-nine are injured statewide, and more than 29 counties in the state sustained storm damage, leading the governor to declare a state of emergency.
“Please pray for those who lost their life, those who are missing and those leading the search efforts, those who are healing, and their families,” Reeves posted on social media Saturday evening.
In a strange twist, an earthquake was also registered near the city of Magee, Mississippi during the storms. However, no damage was caused by the 3.0-magnitude tremor.
The monster storm, which crossed multiple states over the weekend, killed at least 33 people, with officials in Missouri and Arkansas also reporting deaths.
Dust storms caused by the system’s winds claimed almost a dozen lives on Friday, according to the Associated Press.
Eight people died in a Kansas highway pileup involving at least 50 vehicles.
