The naked dress, ironically, has a long and layered history in fashion.
From Kate Moss accidentally rocking a sheer dress in 1993 to Rose McGowan baring all at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, a naked dress never fails to make headlines.
McGowan, then 25, commanded attention in a see-through Hanson dress at the VMAs, forever changing the trajectory of sheer dresses. The beaded number exposed every one of her curves, causing her to be “slut shamed” for the design, as the designer admitted to Page Six in 2020. But Hanson added that the racy statement was still a major trend-starter.
“Those kinds of looks were happening on the runway at the time, but I think she was the person who took it from the runway to the red carpet,” Hanson continued to Page Six. “I don’t remember anyone doing it before her. Other people have worn similar things since then, but she was the first to really have that ‘wow’ moment.”
More recently, Bianca Censori dropped jaws in a completely transparent nude dress at the 2025 Grammys. Censori, who Kanye West tied the knot with in 2022, arrived on the carpet in a fluffy black coat but later stripped it off to reveal the risqué design.
